A primeira chamada de um telefone celular foi realizada em 03 de abril de 1973, em Nova Iork, nos Estados Unidos, pelo pesquisador Martin Cooper, da Motorola. Somente dez anos depois, o celular chegou ao mercado americano e europeu, pesando 794 gramas e custava aproximadamente 4.000 mil dólares. Devido ao seu peso ganhou o apelido de “tijolo” pelos consumidores. O celular chegou ao Brasil em 1990. Na época, segundo dados da Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações(Anatel), o país contava com 667 aparelhos. Em 1991, o número passou para 6.700 unidades. Em 1992 ultrapassou os 30 mil telefones celulares. Com a privatização da telefonia móvel no Brasil em 1997, o mercado se abriu para o capital privado, onde ocorreu um grande investimento no setor. Ocorreu um enorme aumento na produção de aparelhos, com isso, novos serviços foram oferecidos a um menor preço, numa disputa por novos consumidores. Ao longo dos anos, novos modelos mais sofisticados foram surgindo, fazendo com que os celulares mais básicos começassem a ficar mais baratos. Assim, a grande massa populacional teria acesso a essa tecnologia.
